Urskog, virgin forest

Multicultural and intertwined ideas that materialize in the shape of art, Daniel Nyström is a Swedish artist that creates unique pieces inspired by his childhood memories, art from remembrance. From the forest and seashore of west Sweden to the charming Villa de Leyva, Colombia, Nyström based his studio in a place that provides him with all the tools to enhance his creativity.

Unlimited intercontinental creations and collaborations with creatives forms like fashion, architecture, and design came together to create Urskog, a collection for WOMA Hatmakers, inspired by his origins but also his present, the treasure in front of his eyes, “a country with craftsmanship as old as a tale”.

This limited edition, created in his Colombian studio, is a collection of four designs in wool that the artist dyes himself carefully and with an expert eye. Structure and color are what puts his stamp on it, from deep forest green to moonlight blue.

Urskog means “virgin forest” in his mother tongue and comes from the mystical memories of his native Sweden, as the artist says “forest built my soul and seawater is my blood”. His connection with hats goes back 25 years, with a collection of more than 200 pieces, this invitation was very hard to refuse.

“I never make hats for people, I do them because they have a message for those who can listen to its secrets”. As Nyström explains, he believes everything people wear has a soul, and he shared a bit of his own in every artwork.

Art is in the air he breaths, his dad was a gallerist and his mother an artist, his second home was a studio, and he learned from an early age that there is no point in fighting what your destiny brings. A teacher told him once, art is in the unexpected side of everything, well, the unexpected took him to Colombia, where he continues to create with the mountains and sky as his backyard.
