Inside out: Tradition to luxury

Palma Canaria

Palma canaria Edit 1

Value by proximity. The continuous path of seeking inspiration in unexpected places that have always been there but many times have gone unnoticed. Mónica Arbeláez and Juliana Quintero, a mother-daughter duo that decided to merge and create Palma Canaria, a brand that finds inspiration in Colombia´s most praised treasure, its cultural heritage.

In 2016, after a trip to the country´s Atlantic coast, these two entrepreneurs decided to show the world the hidden beauties of their traditions. They noticed the hard work and soul placed in each craft piece they made and decided to start a journey that today it’s still open-ended.

Palma Canaria works with artisan communities in different regions of Colombia: Atlántico, Quindío, and Boyacá. Each of them has special technics that have passed from generation to generation and are now imprinted in the brand´s identity.

Storytelling. For this duo telling a story with their products is as important as telling the story of the hands that made it. Each piece carries the legacy of an artist that has worked their entire life with materials they find in nature.

Natural fibers in the center of their creation process. Iraca palm, Bejuco, and copper wire are part of a cultural imaginary that has been present in the country since its origins, but only now brands started seeing them as raw materials for their creations and Palma Canaria pioneered in its use for modern and innovative pieces that break the paradigm that crafts can’t be à la mode

Bags, hand fans, slippers, hats, and some statement garment pieces are created with an intricate net in a variety of colors, textures, and shapes, giving each piece a unique personality. The common ground: innovation and 100% handmade.

Love for what is ours is their motto. These entrepreneurs have lived by the phrase “don’t look outside for what lies within”, embracing the cultural richness of their country and feeling the power of local.

Palma Canaria will continue to empower and give a voice to artisans and storytellers that have enhanced Colombian heritage to take ancient technics to international markets, turning their products into wearable art pieces growing into a worldwide recognized brand.
